Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening allows us to remove or reduce stains on your teeth, giving them a brighter, more attractive appearance. Dr. Neil J. Gajjar and his associates can use this popular technology to help give you the smile of your dreams.

Why do our teeth develop stains? Well, the enamel on our teeth becomes more porous as we age, and gradually becomes darker. Acidic foods and drinks -- such as diet cola -- makes the enamel even more porous, and leave it vulnerable to stains. Tobacco, red wine, coffee and tea are the most likely to leave those ugly yellow stains.

Different types of peroxide solution are used to whiten our teeth. The solution penetrates the enamel of our teeth, oxidizing the stains and bleaching the layer of tooth beneath the enamel.

You can whiten your teeth at home -- using kits you can purchase from our dental office -- or you can receive professional whitening in our conveniently-located Mississauga office.

FAQs -- Click to reveal the answers to teeth whitening questions

Is it possible to get really white teeth just by brushing and flossing daily?

The enamel on our teeth darkens with age, and even the most skilled brushing and flossing cannot prevent that from happening entirely. But you can do your part to keep your teeth bright by brushing and flossing daily, not using tobacco, and limiting your intake of staining foods and drinks.

If I want white teeth, should I avoid red wine?

Red wine, coffee and tea are notorious for staining your teeth. Diet cola is also a problem, because its acidity breaks down your tooth's enamel -- leaving it prone to stains. You don't need to avoid these beverages entirely -- just be mindful of what they might do to your smile, and try to limit your intake.

Is at-home whitening just as good as in-office whitening?

The teeth whitening kits available for purchase in our dental office are of a very high quality, and are superior to a kit you may purchase in a drugstore. But an advantage to our in-office whitening is the powerful lights we use to accelerate the bleaching process.

Does my dental insurance cover teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is typically an “extra” that is not covered by insurance, but everyone has different coverage. We would be happy to help you understand your available coverage, so please ask us at your next appointment.
